Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing the typically ribbed spiral-form shell. These creatures lived in the sea between 240 to 265 million years ago, when they became extinct along with dinosaurs. The name ‘ammonite’ originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon.
They are commonly found as fossils, formed when the remains or traces of the animal became buried in sediment which later solidified into rock. Ammonites were marine animals and had a coiled external shell similar to the modern pearly nautilus.
